Member notes

Most Institute members should have, by now, received renewal invoices by post or email. Even without an invoice, members can renew easily online at aia.org member services.

Memberships unique to AIA Continental Europe (professional affiliate, unassigned) will receive renewal information from the Chapter in due order.

In the meantime, AIA Continental Europe is pleased to recognize these new members…

Membership notices

Chapter membership notices are going out very soon; please note that local dues (those not assessed through the Institute) are taking a jump in 2008. (See the board meeting minutes from London). As no space is dedicated to this increase in the dues letter, I wish to ease the shock here. See through the red by recalling this:

  1. Chapter dues have not increased for some years. (Ed. note: you would think the outgoing two-term secretary would have this information at his fingertips! Alas, he does not.)
  2. While from the US perspective the increase seems particularly onerous, the chapter is taking a bigger hit every year as the dollar slides in value to the euro. (In other words, from the chapter's perspective, dues being paid in dollars have been decreasing over the past few years. At this writing, a $100 dues payment yields less that €70 for AIACE. Ouch.)

International membership in the AIA

2007 AIACE President, Karl Hartnack, AIA, shares this letter from the Institute's International Director, Michael Lischer, AIA, seeking input regarding membership in the Institute for AIA members living overseas:

As part of my responsibility as International Director, I sit on several board committees. One of these is the Membership Committee. This committee is currently engaged in strategic discussions about the AIA’s membership categories and dues structure. Among the things we are looking at is the structure of the “international membership”. This includes issues such as the dues structure for international associates verses associates, the name of the international associate category of membership, how the existing membership structure accommodates international members with and without US licenses, etc.

The Membership Committee’s summer meeting takes place on the weekend of July 7th, where these matters will be discussed. I am very interested in any thoughts, comments, complaints, recommendations, etc that you and your chapter members may have. All input, critical or otherwise, is greatly appreciated!

Feel free to share this letter with your members and I welcome everyone to contact me by email or phone with their comments by Wednesday, the 4th of July. Attached, is the appropriate section from the Institute’s byelaws for reference.

Thanks very much for your input!

Best regards,

Michael Lischer AIA RIBA

International Director, American Institute of Architects

Please do not write the AIACE site editor. A temporary email address has been enabled to receive your thoughts: input AT aiainternational DOT org.

Section mailing lists

While the page is a work in progress, chapter operations is being presented now to introduce section mailing lists, as requested by the section directors at the last board meeting.

Each member in good standing within the chartered territory of AIA Continental Europe will receive a subscription notice for their respective list. Chapter members who are not part of the chartered territory of the chapter (and therefore part of no particular section) may subscribe to any or all section lists of interest. Members from any section interested in other section lists may also subscribe to as many lists as they wish.

Members with questions about their omission from subscription should direct their query to the chapter secretary.

Year 2007 member renewals echo percentages from 2006

Mid-way through March, 146 out of 220 members of AIA Continental Europe have renewed their commitment to the chapter for 2007. Last year, the renewal rate for memberships was 64% — albeit in February. At the end of March, AIA and AIA Continental Europe member benefits are suspended. The removal of email addresses from the chapter mailing lists generated some late renewals last year; effort from the section directors and the membership committee chair also strengthened the renewal rate.—Richard Anderson, AIA, AIACE Secretary

Membership reminder

By now, you should have received a copy of your invoice for membership in the AIA and AIA Continental Europe for renewal of your membership in 2007. Note that AIA Continental Europe has no online renewal system — members renewing with AIA Continental Europe must do so by post, fax or a file attachment by email. We ask that you not send credit card information as text in the body of an email as its security can not be known.

In December, local only members of AIA Continental Europe received a dues letter with an error. The membership dues deadline was incorrectly noted as 15 December 2007 — please understand that dues were to have been paid by 15 January, now extended to 15 February. Affected members should have already received an email noting this.

AIA membership dues were to have been paid by 15 January. If you've not done so already, full AIA members can renew their membership online (direct link).

While the chapter secretary appreciates your personal notes, please note that AIA members can return to the member services page to update their membership profile.

Membership renewal invoices

Membership invoices from the Institute are now available for AIA Continental Europe members in member designations (PDF link) of Architect, Associate, International Associate and Emeritus members (who are continuing with their magazine subscription). Members might not yet have invoices by post or email but invoices are ready for online renewal. The online renewal process begins at http://aia.org/nav_renewmembership. Members having problems with the online renwal process are encouraged to seek help first at the “Login tips” link on the renewal start page. Payment of invoices is due 15 January 2007.

Chapter invoices for local “unassigned” memberships and “Professional Affiliate” members will be emailed or posted before mid-December.

(I have just completed the renewal process. I do not recall being asked, last year, for US registration information. If any member does not have this information readily available and find the renewal can be completed, please contact Richard or leave a comment in the comment section of this post.)

Managing contact information

AIA membership renewal invoicing for 2007 dues begins in earnest this month. Accuracy of member contact information is an important component of the process. Unfortunately, no one-step program exists to check or correct every necessary channel of contact, thereby making assistance from members essential.

All of the following items need attention when contact information changes. (For members belonging only to AIA Continental Europe, only the second two need attention.)

  1. Change contact data with AIA National: http://www.aia.org/nav_updateprofile
  2. Change AIA Continental Europe mailing list email: http://lists.aiaeurope.org/mailman/options/AIACE/
  3. Send changes to: membership@aiaeurope.org

Notes: The system is best served if one uses the same email address for AIA National, AIA Continental Europe mailing lists and AIA Continental Europe contact data. The Chapter database email list is checked occasionally against the mailing lists but relying on any random check would result in missed communications. Members are encouraged to review their contact data at any time through the member finder.
