Enhancing Learning Through Design

The Committee on Architecture for Education (@aiacae) annual conference will take place in Barcelona, Spain, from 27-30 April. The 2014 theme – the Value of Design – finds ample expression in Barcelona where design and designers are celebrated. Whereas last year’s conference in San Francisco focused on design thinking and technology, the 2014 conference will underscore the influence of culture, art, and history on the design of places for learning.

Why Barcelona? The post-Franco era in Spain allowed the re-emergence of regionalism, and Catalonia, of which Barcelona is the heart, responded enthusiastically. With a robust economy by southern European standards, Mediterranean coastline, and rich architectural heritage, Barcelona is a thriving city with a unique design sensibility.

One focus of the Catalonian emergence is the education of their children, and they embarked on an ambitious program of creating new learning environments. The selection of architects through design competitions resulted in a large number of innovative and creative learning environments. A broad sampling of these buildings, plus visits to well known architectural gems are part of the CAE 2014 Conference, The Value of Design in Education.

Continuing education credits in Spain

Registration remains open for the 2012 AIA COD + HRC Conference, “The Role of Style in Defining Architectural Design Excellence”.  During the course of a week, earn continuing education credits in one of the more humane urban environments on the planet. Visit the legendary Casa de Retiro Espiritual, winner of a 1980 PA Award, designed by Emilio Ambasz, and two sites on almost every architect’s bucket list: The Grand Mosque in Cordoba, and The Alhambra in Granada. If you’re really in for it, put your feet on African soil, visiting the famed blue villages of Chefchouan and Tetouan and the unmatched Medina of Fez in Morocco. —via Mike Mense FAIA, Anchorage Alaska, 2012 Chair AIA Committee on Design

#ACSA International Conference | Barcelona, Spain

The first ACSA International Conference since 2005 will focus on schools and intellectual leadership as we transition to new economic scenarios and professional cultures in architecture worldwide.

The relationship between schools and the profession can be very permeable and often imprecise. Each informs the other, at times leading to greater relevance, at other times leaving disconcerting gaps. The 2012 ACSA International Conference will focus on CHANGE, and will explore these issues in relation to seven themes, Civic Engagement, Academia, Practice, Technology, Cities, Globalization, Sustainability and one flexible open category.

Read more about or register for the 2012 ACSA International Conference CHANGE, Architecture, Education, Practices June 20-22, 2012 | Barcelona, Spain.
